You've probably noticed something different about how search works lately.
You type a question into Google and before you even see a list of websites, you get an answer. A full, formatted, sourced answer sitting right at the top of the page. No clicking required.
That answer came from somewhere. It came from a website Google or an AI decided was the most credible, most relevant, most authoritative source on that topic.
It might not be yours.
For years, SEO was the game. Rank on page one, get clicks, get customers. And SEO still matters. But something new is running alongside it now.
It's called Answer Engine Optimization, or AEO. And the basic idea is this: AI-powered tools like Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and others are now answering questions directly instead of just linking to websites. Your customers are asking those tools questions about your industry, your services, and your competitors every single day.
The businesses showing up in those answers aren't there by accident.
You don't need to understand how large language models work. You need to understand one thing: if someone asks an AI "who does web design in Sussex County" or "what should I look for in a local contractor" and your business isn't cited, you don't exist in that conversation.
AEO is the practice of structuring your website content so AI engines recognize you as a trustworthy, authoritative source worth quoting. That means clear, direct answers to the questions your customers are actually asking. It means content organized in a way AI can parse and pull from. It means your business information is consistent, credible, and everywhere it should be.
It's not magic. It's not complicated. It's just a different way of thinking about your content.
Here's the uncomfortable part. AEO is still early enough that most small businesses haven't touched it. But the ones who have are quietly building a presence in places their competitors aren't even looking.
Every time an AI answers a customer's question using your competitor's content, that's a lead that never came to you. Not because your business isn't good. Because your website wasn't set up to answer the question.
That gap closes fast once someone decides to close it.
Start treating your website like it needs to answer questions, not just describe your business. Add an FAQ section. Write content that addresses specific problems your customers have. Make sure your business name, location, and services are clearly stated and consistent everywhere online.
If you're already doing SEO, you're partway there. AEO builds on that foundation. It doesn't replace it.
If you're not doing either, you're leaving the door open for whoever in your market decides to move first.
That might be your competitor. It doesn't have to be.
